Animal Rescue
by Deborah P. Kolodji

fallen bricks spill
from the welcome sign,
there are no zebras
in this abandoned zoo

we ache for the loss
of tigers and lions and bears
eat veggie burgers,  convince
ourselves it’s for the best…

somewhere in space
there’s a planet of animals,
roaming man-made savannahs
terra-formed jungles

each protected species
out of reach from our arrows
out of reach from our hunger
out of reach from our world
